About the Department

Antiquities auctions in London

Provenance matters as much as the object. Shabti, Roman lamps and Bronze Age tools with old collection labels, dealer receipts or family paperwork attract far stronger bidding, so keep everything that comes with them.

Our antiquities sales feature objects from the ancient world, including Egyptian shabti and amulets, Roman bronzes and oil lamps, Near Eastern pottery and cuneiform tablets, Bronze Age tools and early manuscripts. Every lot is assessed by our in-house team, and we ask for provenance wherever possible, as buyers rightly expect a clear history of ownership.

Whether you have a single piece or an entire collection, London Auctions can help you find the right buyers. We offer free initial valuations with no obligation, and whether you choose to proceed with us or not, our team will give you honest, practical advice on the best route to market.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

How do I get a free antiquities valuation?

You can get a free valuation four ways: visit our saleroom Monday to Friday (8:30am-4:30pm) or at our valuation mornings every other Saturday, send photos via WhatsApp for the fastest response, submit an online request with photos and a description, or post smaller items to us free of charge. One of the team reviews items in person or from photos and responds within one working day, with no obligation to consign.

What types of antiquities do you sell?

We sell Egyptian, Roman, Greek and Near Eastern antiquities, including shabti, amulets, bronzes, oil lamps, pottery, glass and cuneiform tablets, as well as Bronze Age tools and early manuscripts. We welcome single pieces through to old collections, estates and probate instructions.

How much does it cost to sell?

Our fee structure is simple: a £5 + VAT lotting fee per item for larger pieces, or £1.50 + VAT for smaller items, plus 18% + VAT commission on the hammer price. For example, £1,000 worth of items sold would net you £784 after commission, excluding the lotting fee. There’s never a charge for the initial valuation, whether or not you go ahead.

When will I receive payment?

Once your items sell and all buyers have settled their invoices, we process payment by bank transfer within 21 days of the sale ending.

Do I need provenance to sell antiquities?

Provenance is not always essential, but it makes a real difference. Old collection labels, letters, receipts or photographs showing when and where a piece was acquired help buyers bid with confidence and often lead to higher prices. Bring whatever paperwork you have and we will advise.
