XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analysis is a scientific way of finding out exactly what an item is made of without damaging it. A safe, low-energy X-ray beam is directed at the piece, and the elements inside – gold, silver, platinum and others – each give off their own signature. Our XRF machine reads this instantly, and a report can be printed detailing the exact make-up of the item.
Why XRF rather than acid testing?
Acid testing is invasive, less precise and can damage items. XRF is completely non-destructive and gives an immediate, accurate breakdown of metal content. It works whether or not an item is hallmarked, and even where hallmarks are present they can be worn, altered or not fully representative of the true metal content.
Who it’s for
- Sellers – verified metal content gives bidders confidence and helps items reach their full value at auction.
- Executors and solicitors – XRF is included in our enhanced jewellery valuation for probate, supporting accurate valuations and fair division of an estate.
- Collectors and traders – fast, reliable analysis on multiple items, with a printed report on request.
- Insurance – an accurate breakdown of metal composition for items where hallmarks are absent or unclear.
How it works

- At your home or office – our XRF machine is fully mobile, so we can test at your home, a solicitor’s office or another location by arrangement.
- By post – get in touch first, then send your items by a fully insured, trackable service.
