About the Department

London's art auctioneers

From Victorian oils to modern prints, condition, signature and subject drive the price. A James Webb view of Paris sold for £4,382. Don’t clean or reframe anything before we’ve seen it.

Our art sales feature oil paintings, watercolours, prints, sculpture and works on paper, spanning Old Master, Victorian, modern and contemporary periods. Every lot is assessed by our in-house team, who draw on years of experience valuing pieces sourced from private individuals, probate estates, executors and house clearances.

If you want to sell art you no longer want or need, whether a single painting or an entire collection, London Auctions can help you unlock its full value. We offer free initial valuations with no obligation, and whether you choose to proceed with us or not, our team will give you honest, practical advice on the best route to market.

Selling art with London Auctions

Whether you are downsizing, your tastes have changed, or you have inherited a collection, London Auctions offers a straightforward way to sell art in London and Surrey. We regularly handle works valued from £50 to £5,000 and upwards, from antique oil paintings to modern screenprints.

The value of a work depends on many factors: the artist's reputation, provenance and exhibition history, period and style, medium, condition, size, subject matter and previous auction records for comparable works. Our team weighs all of these when giving you an estimate.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

How do I get a free art valuation?

You can get a free valuation four ways: visit our saleroom Monday to Friday (8:30am-4:30pm) or at our valuation mornings every other Saturday, send photos via WhatsApp for the fastest response, submit an online request with photos and a description, or post smaller framed pieces to us free of charge. One of the team reviews your art in person or from photos and responds within one working day, with no obligation to consign.

What sort of art do you sell?

We sell art including oil paintings, watercolours, original prints, sculpture and works on paper, spanning Old Master, Victorian, modern and contemporary periods. We also handle full estate and probate collections featuring art, from a single painting to an entire collection.

How much does it cost to sell?

Our fee structure is simple: a £1.50 + VAT lotting fee per item for most paintings, prints and sculpture, or £5 + VAT for larger, furniture-sized pieces, plus 18% + VAT commission on the hammer price. For example, £1,000 worth of art sold would net you £784 after commission, excluding the lotting fee. There’s never a charge for the initial valuation, whether or not you go ahead.

When will I receive payment?

Once your art sells and all buyers have settled their invoices, we process payment by bank transfer within 21 days of the sale ending.

What kind of art sells well?

Paintings by established artists, sculpture from bronzes to marbles, limited edition prints, contemporary art, Asian art, Art Deco and modernist pieces, and work by promising emerging artists are all in demand with our bidders.

Can I sell a whole collection?

Yes. You can consign individual works or an entire collection, and we will put together a plan that suits you.
